Water and sanitation in West Africa: A Spong-run project to strengthen the civil society

Last December 2013, the Permanent Secretariat of Non-Governmental Organizations launched a new project entitled “Water and Sanitation for All: building a strong and vibrant civil society in Africa.”
This UNDEF(United Nations Democracy Fund)-funded project seeks to strengthen the civil society in eight African countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal and Togo), in order to enable its members to uphold their say and leverage in decision-making circles in order to influence government decisions relating to access to safe water, hygiene and sanitation (WASH).

Mali, inching towards the end of the tunnel

Over the past two years, Mali has experienced the most serious crisis in its post-colonial history, with the occupation of two thirds of the country by terrorist groups and a coup that undermined the institutions of the Republic. To help the country emerge from the abyss, over the last six months civil society organizations focused their efforts on the provision of humanitarian services, elections and national reconciliation.

FONGTO is training its members

Following a services contract signed between the Civil Society and National Reconciliation support Program (PASCRENA) and the Federation of NGOs in Togo on May 21, 2013, FONGTO organized from May to September 2013 training sessions for its members located in the coastal region.
Overall, four training sessions were proposed, covering various topics pivotal to the activities if its members, including social communication, management, advocacy and community life.

SPONG : Forum Régional d’Echange et Partage sur la "Participation de la base à la Protection Sociale" (fr)

La société civile africaine souhaite la participation des populations à la base des politiques publiques de protection sociale. C’est la principale motivation d’un atelier ouvert ce jeudi 28 novembre à Ouagadougou, à l’initiative du Secrétariat permanent des organisations non gouvernementales (SPONG) et de ses partenaires. Avec pour thème, « participation de la base », cette rencontre est consacrée au partage d’expériences entre acteurs de la protection sociale en Afrique.
