Burkina Faso : SPONG

Burkina Faso: SPONG

Created in 1974, the Permanent Secretariat of Non-Government Organizations (SPONG) is the first coalition of private non-profit NGOs and Associations working in Burkina Faso. The magnitude of the needs and interests for greater efficiency in the context of the severe drought that hit the Sahel between 1970 -1974 led 17 NGOs to gather and create the NGO.

As a national platform, Spong gathers national and international development NGOs and associations, foundations, research and training centres, youth associations and thematic networks. In 2013, the group has 134 member organizations.
Open to all NGOs and development associations intervening in Burkina Faso, it is intended to serve as a framework for dialogue enabling civil society organisations to know one another, to act in the field with more consistency and to speak from one voice in their dialogue with the Government and partners. It also seeks to position itself as the hallmark of the credibility of NGOs and development associations in Burkina Faso.

Our Vision:
“A strong and vibrant civil society working together to influence public policy in order to achieve a just, equitable and democratic society.”

Objectives
• Establish a permanent consultation, representation, advocacy and promotion framework for its members and the civil society;
• Strengthening actions and capacities of NGOs and member development associations through outreach, consultation and training activities;
• Establish an appropriate positioning of the civil society, nationally, sub-regionally and continentally;
• Establish a constructive dialogue with the State, the private sector and other national and international partners.

Areas of intervention
• Promoting participation and civic dialogue of the CSOs through the monitoring of public policies.
• The representation of the Burkinabe civil society in the reference structures at national and international levels.
• Conducting advocacy at national and international levels( Official Development Assistance , Economic Partnership Agreement , MDGs ... )
• Capitalisation and promotion of Good Practices for member NGOs and development associations through research and the management of a specialized library, a web portal and a newsletter.
• Building the capacities of members on cross-cutting issues (fundraising, associations, partnerships, citizen dialogue ...).

Spong is member of:
